Scudder's Duskywing (Erynnis scudderi)

Scudder's Duskywing (Erynnis scudderi [Skinner])

Wing span: 1 1/4 - 1 3/8 inches (3.2 - 3.5 cm).

Identification: Hindwing fringes are tipped with white. Upperside is brown with small clear spots in the male, larger spots in the female. Male has a costal fold containing yellow scent scales; female has a patch of scent scales on the 7th abdominal segment.

Life history: Males perch to await females.

Flight: Probably two broods from May-August.

Caterpillar hosts: Possibly oaks (Quercus species).

Adult food: Flower nectar.

Habitat: Mountain woodland.

Range: Rare and local in southern Arizona south to Chiapas, Mexico.

Conservation: Populations and habitats in southeastern Arizona should be monitored and action taken if necessary.

The Nature Conservancy Global Rank: G3 - Very rare or local throughout its range or found locally in a restricted range (21 to 100 occurrences). (Threatened throughout its range).
